Powertrim launched to win in global power module market
TFA Europe and Include Industries create new semicon back-end equipment company
’s-Heerenberg/Eindhoven, The Netherlands and Nürnberg, Germany, June 11th, 2024 – At the opening of PCIM Europe in Nürnberg, Germany, the leading exhibition and conference for power electronics, TFA Europe and Include Industries have launched a new company for power module packaging. The new company will build on the heritage of TFA Europe, founded in 2020 by 4 semiconductor tooling veterans, while rebranded to Powertrim Technologies to expand globally. In the heartland of the Dutch semiconductor back-end technology, the eastern part of the Netherlands, TFA Europe was set-up to fill the equipment gap in the growing market for power module packaging. As the global energy transition is in full swing, electrification of the automotive drivetrains, new industrial power applications and the massive growth of renewable energy solutions accelerate the need for power modules. Based on over 40 years of experience in semiconductor trim and form toolmaking and a vast experience in machine building, the founders of Powertrim have a head-start in this new market. Powertrim has the ambition to become the global #1 OEM in high performance handling, assembly and testing technology for automated power electronics manufacturing.
Powertrim has already successfully sold its first flagship product, the modular Flex Line machine, to both customers in Europe, North America and Asia. Huub Claassen, co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer, is responsible for sales and will combine this with his business development role in Boschman Advanced Packaging Technology. Include Industries founders Ilko Bosman and Daan Kersten will join him in the Board as CFO and CEO respectively. An experienced CTO will be recruited shortly. A strategic collaboration with co-founder and toolmaker TSD from ‘s-Heerenberg will allow for an holistic offer to Powertrim customers from initial tooling design to ramp-up for series production.

Since this is one of the final steps in the manufacturing process, a high yield is essential not to waste added value of earlier processes’, added Daan Kersten and Ilko Bosman.

’s-Heerenberg/Eindhoven/Nürnberg (Duitsland), 11 juni 2024 – Bij aanvang van PCIM Europe, ’s-werelds belangrijkste vakbeurs en conferentie voor vermogenselektronica, hebben TFA Europe en Include Industries een nieuw bedrijf gelanceerd voor het assembleren van zogenaamde ‘power modules’. Het nieuwe bedrijf zal de wereldmarkt gaan veroveren onder de nieuwe naam Powertrim Technologies en voortbouwen op de basis die door vier semiconductor tooling-veteranen is gelegd met de oprichting van TFA Europe in 2020. Opgericht in het oosten van Nederland, de bakermat van de zogenaamde ‘semiconductor back-end’ technologie, vulde TFA Europe de leemte in de productieketen voor het assembleren van power modules, een groeiende markt. Terwijl de wereldwijde energietransitie goed op stoom is gekomen, versnelt de elektrificatie van de aandrijflijnen van auto’s, de indrukwekkende opmars van duurzame energie-oplossingen en een aantal nieuwe industriële toepassingen de vraag naar power modules. Op basis van meer dan veertig jaar ervaring met het vervaardigen van gereedschappen voor het verpakken van IC’s (integrated circuits), het snijden, buigen van de pootjes van microchips (zogenaamde trim & form) en gerelateerde machinebouw, hebben de oprichters van Powertrim een voorsprong opgebouwd in deze nieuwe markt. Powertrim heeft de ambitie om wereldwijd marktleider te worden in hoogwaardige assemblage en test technologie voor geautomatiseerde vervaardiging van vermogenselektronica.
Powertrim heeft inmiddels al de eerste exemplaren van haar vlaggenschip-systeem, de modulaire Flex Line machine, verkocht aan klanten in Europa, Noord-Amerika en Azië. Huub Claassen, medeoprichter en Commercieel Directeur, is verantwoordelijk voor verkoop en zal deze rol blijven combineren met zijn verantwoordelijkheid voor Business Development bij Boschman Advanced Packaging Technology uit Duiven. De oprichters van Include Industries, Ilko Bosman en Daan Kersten, zullen toetreden tot de directie van Powertrim als respectievelijk Financieel en Algemeen Directeur. Een ervaren Technisch Directeur wordt op korte termijn gezocht. Een strategische samenwerking met medeoprichter en gereedschapsmaker TSD uit ’s-Heerenberg zorgt dat Powertrim een compleet palet aan diensten kan aanbieden aan haar klanten, van eerste gereedschapsontwerp tot reguliere serieproductie in grote aantallen.

‘Deze nieuwe toepassing wordt nu nog vaak ingevuld met aangepaste traditionele IC assemblage en -verpakkingsmachines terwijl de Flex Line volledig vanaf een wit vel papier is ontworpen om individuele power modules op te bouwen tegen de laagste integrale kosten en met de beste kwaliteit. Aangezien dit een van de laatste stappen is in het productieproces, is een laag uitvalpercentage essentieel om niet te veel waarde van de vaak honderden eerdere processtappen te vernietigen’, vulden Daan Kersten en Ilko Bosman aan.
